In February, we continue exploring the beautiful underwater world of reefs at S.E.A. Aquarium. For young marine explorers thirsty for knowledge, the S.E.A. Aquarium has a cool line-up of activities for them to learn while having fun!

Reef-tastic Mission

On weekends and during the Lunar period from 19 Feb to 1 Mar, kids can take part in the Reef-tastic Mission located at the Ocean Gallery.
Here, kids can pick up an activity map and begin a journey which teaches them some interesting facts about life on a coral reef.
The first stop is the eye teaser. Many animals living on coral reefs are excellently camouflaged and extremely difficult to spot. Using these enlarged images, try to see how many of the hidden animals you can find.
Take a look at this example and see how many pygmy seahorses you can find! Here’s a hint! Look for the eyes!

Can you find the two pygmy seahorses?
The second stop is the coral skeleton exhibit. Corals are not rocks or plants. They are made of tiny animals called “polyps” which have a hard outer skeleton made of calcium (similar to a snail’s shell).
Here, kids can explore the diversity of coral skeletons. They have the opportunity to touch and feel some large spikey branching corals to round corals that look like brains.
The third stop is the live coral exhibit which shows how the S.E.A. Aquarium Aquarists breed corals. Here, the team will show three different types of corals which include the parent and their offspring in different stages of growth.

The fourth stop is our second live coral exhibit which shows how corals feed. On the hour, the team will feed mushroom corals with shrimp and fish.
Corals have tentacles that they use to capture prey. These tentacles catch the food and transport it to the corals mouth.

Kids can see this happen up close by looking through large magnifying lenses. If you can’t wait, here’s a video of a mushroom coral swallowing a silverfish.
