What is the JASON Project?
When the Marine Life Park (MLP) opens in 2012, visitors can look forward to not just fun and exploration, but a healthy dose of marine education as well.
The collaboration between Resorts World and Sea Research Foundation will involve the development and implementation of The JASON Project science programs to the students in the region. So, what exactly is The JASON Project?
A Subic Experience
“This was an opportunity of a lifetime, and I am the first to experience it!”
19 year-old Shaun Wee is currently on a 4-month internship program at our Subic Bay facility, doing laboratory work, water quality measurements, and prepping fish food. And he loves it.
Shaun is the very first intern at the Marine Life Park, where he learnt the ropes from our team of marine mammal specialists and vets. His internship is the result of a partnership between Resorts World and Temasek Polytechnic, the first in Singapore to offer a formal three year Diploma in Veterinary Technology program in 2007.
This partnership meant both Resorts World and Temasek Polytechnic would work hand in hand on various research and educational programs and projects related to marine and wildlife conservation for the students from the Diploma in Veterinary Technology and Diploma in Biotechnology courses.
We caught up with the quiet and studious 19-year old and he shares his Subic experience with us.
Caring for the oceans and its marine creatures begin with education
The vast oceans and its captivating marine creatures have always intrigued us. We studied it, we dive into it, and we debate at great lengths over it. While we can’t claim to know everything about it, we can aspire to inspire people to not just care for, but to protect our ocean planet through education, research and exploration.
And that is the mission of the Sea Research Foundation, which in collaboration with Resorts World, will jointly develop a marine environmental curriculum for students in Southeast Asia.
President and CEO of Sea Research Foundation Steve Coan was at Resorts World recently to discuss the collaboration between the two parties on education programmes for the upcoming Marine Life Park. Here’s what he had to say about what the programmes can achieve.
“The concern for conservation, education and research, and a real interest in helping people around the world explore and understand the ocean environments are values that I would say is most important.” – Dr Steve Coan.
Education at the World’s Largest Marine Classroom
“You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.”
Clay P. Bedford
Imagine your classroom in an aquarium, with thousands of marine species like sharks, jellyfish, coral reefs and a host of other species surrounding you. Or have marine animal specialists as your guest teachers, sharing first-hand information on how to care for animals and the importance of species conservation.
All this can be a reality come 2012, with the upcoming Marine Life Park (MLP).
